Diagnosis: How democratic is your school?

Schools are spaces in which democracy and citizenship can be experienced first-hand. However, as you might have already experienced, the concept of democracy in general and at schools in particular is as diverse as the diversity of the community to which it is applied. This means that the different agents at school, including students, educators and families, may experience democracy in different ways.

To reflect on the question “How democratic is our school?”, a self assessment tool can be very helpful. Building on the theoretical framework developed by Laura Farré-Riera and Núria Simó-Gil, educators and researchers from Lab School Paris have created a questionnaire that represents a starting point for this reflection process and can help schools to find new ways to become more democratic.
